Citizen Science

Upon request

Come and learn more about what you see while contributing valuable information to our monitoring and conservation programs.

Conservation efforts require information on the environment that anyone can help collect. Our fun, easy to use underwater guide sheets allow any snorkeler or diver to record sightings of important or iconic species with little training. Guide sheets focus on important and iconic organisms such as sharks, turtles and napoleon wrasse, groupers as indicators of fishing and butterfly fishes as indicators of reef health.

Coral Planting – Weekly

Coral Planting – Weekly

Every Sunday, alternately at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru & Angsana Ihuru
Every Monday at Angsana Velavaru

Join us in the conservation of healthy coral reefs by transplanting naturally broken pieces to give them a second chance.

Corals are transplanted to spaces on the reef using cement or attached to metal frames. Transplanted corals enjoy a high survival rate and some grow extremely quickly given favourable conditions. Our coral gardens provide an important habitat for young reef fishes that everyone can enjoy.

Coral transplanting

Coral transplanting

Build marine habitats by planting coral with the Banyan Tree Maldives Marine Lab!

With facilities on both Banyan Tree Vabinfaru and Angsana Ihuru, Banyan Tree Maldives Marine Lab supports marine biodiversity. Guests can join the effort by planting coral into solid bases to extend coral reefs. Natural tidal action breaks off coral, which is then collected by the Banyan Tree Maldives Marine Lab for replanting to extend both the life of that coral branch as well as the overall coral reef.
