Starting off 2010 with Tree Planting in Banyan Tree Bintan
On the 27th of January 2010, Laguna Bintan started the new year with a bang, giving saplings of trees in a formal ceremony at a new office of Sub-District in East Tanjung Uban Island.

Mr Ansar Ahmad, Regent of Bintan Island, officially opened the event with more than 100 people in attendance consisting of key people in the community such as, Mr Master Tahir (Vice Regent of Bintan Island), head of Bintan Parliament, head of Police Agency of Bintan Island, head of sub district, head of the villages, head of woman group associations and members of the media.

The 1000 saplings that Laguna Bintan gave will be planted at the yard of a new office, along the road, schools, and yard of community houses. In his speech, Mr Ansar Ahmad voiced appreciation and to Banyan Tree, in our support of the Indonesian government’s program “every man is called upon to plant a tree”.

After the ceremony, Laguna Bintan associates visited a new workshop run by a women’s association at Sekera, making woven fabric with traditional way. The workshop, funded by the Bintan government, was meant to better promote and preserve traditional art of Riau Province. We look forward to bringing our seedlings students to learn more about sustainable business and handicraft making!
