One of the ways Banyan Tree seeks to enable long term prosperity for the communities in which it operates by harnessing core competencies to address issues facing the community. In the case of Seedlings Café, a social enterprise eatery concept aims to empower young adults via vocational training, with Banyan Tree’s Food & Beverage expertise creating lasting positive impacts.
Launched in Hoi An, Vietnam in April 2013, Seedlings Café leverages the restaurant expertise of Laguna Lăng Cô to provide vocational food & beverage training and experience for young adults at risk of societal exclusion.
Covering kitchens, service, and overall restaurant management, the training program starts as paid internships which also provide basic life skills training to assist with overall personal development. Hands-on approach within a live training restaurant provides genuine situational experience.
With a long term goal of self-funding vocational and life skills training via income and profits from restaurant operations, initial funding for Seedlings Café is provided by Banyan Tree Global Foundation, which is also actively looking to bring both the social enterprise approach as well as the success of Seedlings Café Hoi An to other locations in the future.
